Pet Duck Steals Kid's Soccer Countdown Board, Leads Entire Sideline on Victory Parade
A suburban pet duck in Ohio reportedly grabbed a handheld scoreboard, sprinted across two fields, and briefly became the loudest assistant coach in rec league history.
What Happened
A white pet duck named Waffles is being blamed for the most motivational interruption of Saturday morning soccer in suburban Columbus. According to several parents, Waffles had been riding to games in a wagon because his owner refused to leave him home alone. During the second half of an under-9 match, the duck apparently became fascinated by the portable flip-board used to track the final countdown.
Witnesses say Waffles waddled up, snatched the board by its strap, and suddenly accelerated with the sort of urgency usually reserved for unattended french fries. Children from both teams started chasing him, assuming this was either an emergency or the start of a new drill. Instead, the duck looped triumphantly around the sideline while parents cheered, one referee laughed too hard to blow the whistle, and the scoreboard volunteer gave pursuit in slide sandals with almost no chance of success.
Why This Matters
Sports are supposed to build community, and few things unite rival parents faster than a duck stealing official equipment and turning a one-goal game into a full parade situation.
Deeper Context
The board was recovered with only minor grass damage, and no one seems especially interested in enforcing any anti-duck sideline rules. Coaches later posed Waffles for photos near the snack table, where he reportedly attempted a second theft involving orange slices. League organizers are now considering whether the animal counts as a mascot, a distraction, or the season's clear MVP.
